Domains Updated 6 March 2024

You can transfer your domain from TekLan to another registrar at any time. This guide covers how to unlock the domain, get your auth code or IPS tag, and initiate the transfer.

Before You Start

  • Make sure the domain is not within 30 days of expiry — renew it first if needed, as some registrars will not accept a transfer close to expiry.
  • Domains cannot be transferred within 60 days of initial registration or a previous transfer (ICANN policy).
  • Have access to the registrant email address on the domain — you will need it to approve the transfer.

Transferring .com, .net, .org and Other gTLDs

Step 1: Get Your Auth Code (EPP Code)

  1. Log in to the client area.
  2. Go to Services, find the domain, and click Manage.
  3. In the right sidebar, click Settings.
  4. The Authorization Code (EPP) section displays or reveals your transfer code.

Keep this code safe — it proves you are the authorised owner and is required by your new registrar to initiate the transfer.

Step 2: Initiate the Transfer at Your New Registrar

Go to your new registrar's transfer page, enter the domain name and auth code, and complete the transfer order there. An approval email will be sent to the registrant email address — click the link to authorise the transfer.

Transfers typically complete within 5–7 days.

Transferring .uk / .co.uk / .org.uk Domains

UK domains use Nominet's IPS tag system instead of auth codes. You can change the IPS tag yourself in the client area:

  1. Log in to the client area.
  2. Go to Services, find the domain, and click Manage.
  3. In the right sidebar, click Settings.
  4. Under Push Domain, enter the IPS tag of your new registrar in the field provided. Your new registrar will tell you their IPS tag — it is usually shown on their domain transfer page.
  5. Click Update Domain.

The domain is immediately released to the new registrar. This action cannot be undone — make sure you have the correct IPS tag before clicking Update Domain.

What Happens to DNS

Your site will continue to work throughout the transfer as long as DNS records are not changed. Once the transfer is complete, DNS management moves to your new registrar. Make a note of all your current DNS records before transferring so you can recreate them there if needed.

Leaving TekLan hosting too? Remember to cancel your hosting service separately — it is independent of the domain. See the cancellation guide.
