How to Transfer a UK Domain Without Downtime

Transferring a UK domain does not have to cause downtime. The key is to understand that the registrar, nameservers, DNS records, website hosting, and email hosting are separate pieces.

Check the Current DNS First

Before transfer, copy the current DNS records. Pay special attention to MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and any verification records.

Do Not Change Nameservers Accidentally

A registrar transfer does not always require a DNS change. If the current nameservers are working, you can often leave them in place during the transfer.

Know the IPS Tag

UK domains use an IPS tag to move between registrars. Your new registrar provides the tag, and the current registrar changes the domain to that tag.

Check After Transfer

Once the transfer completes, confirm the nameservers are still correct, the website loads, and email records remain intact.

If you want TekLan to receive a UK domain, ask us for the current transfer details before making changes at the old registrar.
