Domain renewal is simple administration, but the consequences of missing it can be severe.
Build a Renewal Record
Keep a domain register containing the domain, registrar, account email, expiry date, renewal setting, payment owner and the service it supports. Include domains that only redirect or send email; they can still be business-critical. Review the register when staff, agencies or billing cards change. Store recovery details in a company password manager rather than a personal browser.
Confirm That Renewal Completed
A reminder marked as paid is not the final check. Open the registrar account and confirm that the expiry date moved forward, then keep the invoice. If automatic payment fails, pay the outstanding invoice once and contact billing if the date does not update. Repeated payment attempts can create confusion without renewing the registration.
Protect the Domain Account
Use a unique password and two-factor authentication for both the registrar and its recovery mailbox. Remove former staff and suppliers, and keep contact information accurate. Do not ignore unexpected transfer or contact-change notices. A domain lock can reduce accidental transfers, but it does not replace account security.
If the Domain Has Expired
Contact the registrar immediately. Websites and email may stop before the domain becomes available to somebody else, and recovery rules differ between extensions. Do not change unrelated DNS or buy a replacement domain while the status is unclear. Ask what grace period, restoration charge and final deadline apply, then test the website and email after recovery.
