Most small-business websites need less storage and bandwidth than their owners expect. What they often need more of is reliable processing power, recoverable backups, and help when a change goes wrong. A few measurements will tell you more than an “unlimited” label.
Count websites before anything else
Each separate business site needs a place on the plan. A domain alias that opens the same site is not another website, but a second WordPress installation is. Include staging copies if your host counts them towards the plan limit.
If you manage one brochure site, start with a one-site plan. Choose a multi-site plan when you genuinely need several installations; it is easier to upgrade later than to pay for unused capacity for years.
Measure current storage
A normal brochure website may occupy well under 5 GB. Large image libraries, downloadable files, local video, old backups, cache files, and mailboxes are what usually increase usage. Check the current control panel rather than estimating from the number of pages.
- Measure website files and databases separately.
- Check whether email counts towards the same allowance.
- Remove abandoned staging copies and backup archives only after confirming they are safe to delete.
- Leave working room for updates, temporary files, growth, and a migration copy.
Ten gigabytes is comfortable for many single small-business sites. Image-heavy portfolios, shops, and several sites need more. Video should normally use a streaming platform rather than your web-hosting storage.
Do not confuse traffic with server work
Bandwidth is the data transferred to visitors. CPU, memory, database activity, and input/output determine how quickly the server can create each response. A cached information page is light work even with many visits; an uncached shop filter, import, backup, or membership dashboard can be heavy with relatively few users.
Ask your current host for resource graphs if the site is slow or frequently reaches limits. Those readings help distinguish a plan constraint from an inefficient plugin, slow external service, or oversized image.
Allow for email and backups
If mailboxes live in the hosting account, storage grows continuously unless users archive or delete messages. A team that keeps large attachments can consume more space in email than the website itself. Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace mail does not normally use web-hosting storage.
Find out whether provider-managed backups count towards your quota. Manually stored archives often do, and several complete copies can fill a modest plan quickly.
When shared hosting is enough
Shared hosting is usually the sensible starting point for a company site, blog, portfolio, or modest WordPress installation. It removes server administration and keeps cost predictable. Choose a host that exposes useful controls such as PHP versions, databases, SSL, backups, SFTP, and resource information.
When to choose application hosting or a VPS
Consider isolated application hosting when a business-critical PHP application, active WooCommerce store, or busy site needs predictable assigned resources. Choose a VPS when your developer requires root access, custom packages, persistent services, special ports, or a server stack the shared platform cannot provide.
An unmanaged VPS also makes you responsible for operating-system updates, firewall rules, monitoring, backups, and incident response. Do not upgrade to one merely to cure a slow WordPress plugin.
Plan for peaks, not fantasies
Tell the host about known campaigns, ticket releases, product launches, imports, or seasonal sales. A sudden marketing peak matters more than a vague hope of future growth. Cache public pages, optimise images, test checkout, and arrange monitoring before the campaign begins.
